AYC Junior ActivitiesAs a family club, AYC takes its young members very seriously and makes sure they have plenty of activities to keep them busy, socially involved and happy to be at the lake with their parents. Young children are welcome to accompany their parents in most situations, and the Club grounds provide a safe environment for older kids to roam freely with friends of their own. In addition to our sandy swimming beach, which has a lifeguard on summer weekends and is an unstructured but ongoing attraction for both kids and their parents, organized activities for children of members include the following: AYC Kids Club (Play Yard Baby-sitting)Organized and run by sailing parents whose children are too young to be left on shore without supervision. A group babysitter is hired on race days. The children are kept together at the play yard and the cost is very reasonable. It is a great chance for the children to get to play together and the parents to sail. For more info, contact Katrina Blauvelt AYC Junior Yacht ClubFor Juniors age twelve through high school. Aside from their many sailing activities, this group also holds regular meetings and scheduled activities such as volleyball, cookouts and campouts at the lake, or pizza parties, skating & sleepovers in town. The Juniors also annually select a charity, which they support with collection from the Club church services they conduct for the adult members on Sundays from June through Labor Day. They have their own officers, as well as an adult advisor. Junior TrainingFor children age five through high school. Spring and summer classes are offered at four levels: Early Beginners (age five and up), Beginners (age eight and up), Intermediates and Advanced. Children and relatives of Club members have first priority in classes, but as long as space permits, children of non-members are invited to apply. For more specific info on current classes... click here Junior WeekA week-long resident sailing camp for children of club members ages twelve through eighteen. The camp focuses on sailing classes but also offers social activities. Parents of campers are required to volunteer at least one full day per camper or the equivalent of one full day. Due to an increasing number of youth between the ages of twelve through eighteen who are children of club members, limitations must be made on acceptances into Junior Week with regards to grandchildren and extended family of club members for 2008. Only grandchildren and extended family of club members who have been campers in the past are eligible for 2008. Exceptions will be considered for grandchildren of club members who have made significant contributions of their time and efforts in previous Junior Week Camps. For more info, click here... Laser FleetWhile this fleet is not strictly for Juniors, the Laser is a popular boat among teenagers because of the kids' size, athletic ability / agility and annoying habit of beating their parents in races. Many of our Intermediates and all of our Advanced Junior Training students sail Lasers in class for several years, giving them excellent boat handling skills and competitive experience to bring to fleet races and regattas by the time they are ready to travel. The Juniors own a triple-deck Laser trailer, available for their use when attending out-of-town regattas. After leaving our program, our top junior Laser sailors often continue sailing competitively in college. |
