Brad McFadden

Brad McFadden, center

For those who haven't heard the sad news yet, our good friend Brad McFadden died yesterday (Sat.) in a snow skiing accident. I don't have many details other than he was on a ski run he had skied many times before, when he missed a turn and hit a tree.

Please keep Martha and the family in your prayers.

Louise Pember Update

Louise was moved to a new residence on Sunday. She is in a more comfortable situation with some of her furniture and mementos from her own home.

Please continue to send her cards, call and visit when possible.

Her new address is: Louise Pember, Dogwood Forest, 3315 Thompson Bridge Road, Room # 5, Gainesville, GA 30506 770 531 7800

I am sure if you all send her a Christmas card over the next month her knowing that her friends are thinking of and care about her would be one of the most heart warming gestures she will receive this holiday season.

Emails to AYC...

Longcheer Yacht Club From China

To whom it may concern:

We visited your web-site and sent an e-mail to you several days ago, hoping that you could read us and try to contact us. Yachting is a newly-emerging business in inland China; our club is the first one and we’d like to let the Chinese marine fans know something about the successful yacht club like yours. Would you be kindly to tell us what you think about it? If yes, you don’t have to make a reply; otherwise, e-mail a "no" to szlangqi@public.szptt.net.cn . OK? Best wishes to you and your club!

Sincerely yours,
Jimmy Young

<webmistress' note... I hope ya'll will email and exchange burgees with these guys! Would be fun to add some China Yacht Club burgees to the wall.)

New network for boat owners who like to swap their boat during holidays

Dear Sir,

We want to inform you about our website www.boatswap.info Here boat owners who want to exchange their boat during holidays with boat owners in other countries like France, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Great Britain, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, USA, Canada etc. can contact and make their own swap arrangements.

The idea for the website came after a successful swapping this year with an Irish family, we contacted through the Internet and who wanted to swap boats just like us. They explored the Dutch and Belgian Waterways and we enjoyed the beauty of the Shannon and the Shannon-Erne Waterway in Ireland. Before and during our boating tour many people told us, they think it is a good idea to swap boats. Encouraged by these positive reactions, we have decided to introduce a website for boat swapping on the Internet so that interested people can meet. To enlarge the geographical area the website is in four languages, Dutch, English, German and French.

Joining the network is very easy. Boat owners who are interested in swapping can subscribe. To give the exchange network a good start, everyone who subscribes in the year 2002 is registered free for the years 2002 and 2003. Registered users get access to all the information in the boat list and can contact other registered boat owners in case they want to swap. We take care of the network; the boat owners themselves make the exchange arrangements.

North U Coming to the Atlanta Yacht Club!

North U will be presenting one of their all day Performance Racing Trim seminars at AYC on Saturday, February 22, 2003. The class is scheduled to run from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM drawing fellow sailors from the Atlanta area as well as all around the Southeast. AYC members are entitled to a $25 discount on the cost of the seminar, which includes the new 6th edition of Bill Gladstone's course book, Performance Racing Trim. The costs are $135 for skippers ($110 for AYC), $115 for crew ($90 for AYC). Further, North has graciously offered the course at half price for our Junior sailors. Breaks and lunch are, of course, included in your tuition. What a fantastic Christmas gift for all those hard to shop for sailors in the family!

This Year's Performance Racing Trim seminar taught by seasoned professionals cover sail trim, boat speed, and boat handling with an emphasis on practical, proven, real world techniques that will help you win. Included are the fundamentals of upwind performance, plus advanced techniques, which balance the power of your main and jib for better speed and higher pointing. The course covers refinements in angle of attack, sail depth, and twist to optimize performance in different conditions. In addition, the course covers the latest in spinnaker trim and control for both conventional and asymmetric spinnakers. Further, the course teaches proven boat handling methods, which put you in control. You will leave with the tools to make your boat handling second nature, and your boat speed second to none. The Performance Racing Trim CD - ROM shows sail trim and boat handling in full motion. You'll see how changes in trim change performance, and learn the latest in boat handling. The CD is used to teach the class and is also available for home use.

For more information, please contact Lee Bradley at H (770) 442 - 0821, O (770) 436 - 1596, email snipe12021@mindspring.com or Fran Wainer at North U (800) 347 - 2457, email Fran@northu.northsails.com.

Women's Championship 2002

Kate and I sailed hard to keep the Women's champ trophy this year. Seven boats sailed Sat. 24 in three races in Snipes with moderate breeze. John Mulhausen and team did a great job of RC duty with three fun courses under blue skies. Teams were: Holly Gregory with Barbara Bradshaw, Amy Thompson with Brett Bradshaw, Kathy Bronaugh with Lynn Haney, Velda Hooper with her daughter, Julie Smither with Amy Roberts, Anna Lee Bradley with Courtney , and Kate Hodges and Amanda Hodges. Two races in the morning with a regatta lunch provided before finishing the third race and the traditional Mimosa Party at the pavilion all done by four o'clock. Ed Marks did a jam up job on the regatta and the RC was great. (Mulhausens, Matt Gregory, and Don Dixon)

Hope to send pics if there are any, but it was really laid back and not much hype or photos taken that I could see. But a beautiful day and lots of fun for all the 14 women.

Always fair sailing to you,
Amanda

4th Of July & What AYC Is All About : Families And Fun!!

AYC Entertainment Does It Again..!! What an incredible 4th of July Family Week, patriotic celebration, awesome food, and good old-fashioned FUN week-end for our AYC families - all coordinated and conducted by the Martinroes!! It was the culmination of months of planning by Julia and Jeffrey, the Tumlin Clan (Beth, Bill, Jennifer and Tracy), Patti and Scott Yapp, and Carol Lade. What really made it such a huge success and so much more fun was the vast numbers of club members (62 out of 220 members!!) who volunteered to help throughout the week and week-end! I hope there is room in the Scuttlebutt to include all the names (and that I don't leave anyone out!!) THANKS TO ALL who helped make this SO MUCH FUN!!

Rita McCormack deserves the headline sub-title for giving her week to food preparation!! 200+ folks thought the Gourmet Burger Bar was great, as was Rita's now-famous potato salad (which fed us for three more days!) No one had to slave over the grill Fri night, as Rita cooked the Hams for the Hawg & Pot Luck dinner; and the Sunday morning Cabin Colony Brunch was organized by "still-going" Rita (need to mention that Bob was helping Rita gather tables at 12:30 midnight Sat night!). (Rita did get a break Sat. night, as Richard Trice flew in from Europe Thurs., just in time to cook up some mighty tasty steer for over 150!) Lots of people pitched in, but Carole Lade was a mainstay throughout the week, no matter what the activity, and also as the always-there kitchen assistant and in charge of the awesome Desserts by the Water, Thurs. evening. (We may owe her a new microwave for all the popcorn she popped for the Country Fair!) And, of course, no one would have eaten if the multi-media technology whiz, Kari Beebe, had not handled reservations via the Website, the Hot Line, and e-mails! Thanks Kari for your patience, your willingness to extend, and a job well done! Mary Whitney and Freddie Cleveland had the huge job of giving out all the meal tickets (in exchange for The Check (!) in a short period of time. A Patience Award and Thanks goes to them, too!

There were lots of highlights to the week-long activities! Patti and Scott Yapp and Beth Tumlin decorated the Club and grounds in a virtual sea of red white and blue swagging, flags and ribbons! Patti made the patriotic table decorations that were enjoyed all week! Julia brought out the artistry and creativity in many AYC members with the daily Creative Studio Time. Anna Froehlich and Jane Smith helped throughout the week in such fun makings as Linoleum Rug Making, Rubber Stamping on Textiles, Fabric Painting, and some very personalized T-Shirts. Mary Thompson shared some of her prize secret recipes, including Miniature Creme Puffs and the Best of the Best Brownies! In spite of threatening weather, Randy Smith took a gang off site and demonstrated his amazing radio-controlled airplanes at the Bartow County Airport. And John Todd amazed everyone by coming up with new and little-known facts on his History Tour of Lake Allatoona! (It was surprising how many on board have Native American ancestry!) More fun for the kids Friday included Shaving Cream Art at the beach, and Frisbee Golf!

And there were evening FUNctions such as the AYC Nautical Trivia, led by Mitzi and Henry Wade, and Ice Cream Sundaes served by Orie Wade, Mon. night; a delightful Cruise to Red Top Mountain for dinner Tues. evening, coordinated by Carol Guebert; and the always-popular Casino and Gaming Night Wed. night, coordinated by Julia and Jeffrey, after which the winnings were spent on purchases at the White Elephant Sale, coordinated by Kathleen Fricker and Kay Redmond. (Next time you see Auctioneer Carlin, ask him what new business he's going to start, based on the sale of the last item!) Friday night, the awesome singing duo, Buck and Patrice, returned to AYC to entertain with ballads and folk music of Americana Roots.

Sat night's DJ Dance Party had just as many kids as adults dancing til 11 pm, with Hoola Hoop dancing, Limbo-ing, and learning new Line Dances, as well as the traditional great dancing music. Fun Lady Libby, of Disc Jockeys Unlimited, brought prizes for all of the special events! It was a fun family dancing night!!

July 4th was a day of non-stop fun!! Big and little kids demonstrated their creative art skills, decorating their bikes with flags, streamers, signs, balloons, banners, and anything within reach (!) in preparation for the Annual 4th of July Parade. It was hard to tell which of us was having more fun... the decorators, their parents, or the assistants! Water and Beach Games were organized by Don and Jane Dixon, with assistance by Kitza Muhlhausen, and culminated with a Greased Watermelon Contest, and watermelon and ice cream for all! The (trying-to-be-annual) Trailer-Backing Contest brought out 22 contestants!! Not to be put off by Wed.'s violent storms which soaked the meadow grasses, Carlin and Amanda Hodges blocked off the Point, pulled out their life-size deer, and set about creating the route. Bryce Dryden won, backing through the entire course in an incredible 1 minute, 38 seconds!! (I might humbly mention that he won it in my car!) Amanda won second place, but was disqualified by Carlin, as she WAS a judge!! And Mitzi Wade got the Good Sport award for finally giving up after 10 or 15 minutes!! The Annual Parade of Bikes, Wheelchairs, Scooters, Strollers (and anything else that rolled!) was organized by Patti Yapp. After singing the Star Spangled Banner to the raising of the flag (so aptly done by Bill Tumlin), Carolyn Marks drove the chase car with nephew Hunter Marks proudly holding the American Flag, to a marching rendition of It's a Grand Old Flag!, God Bless America!, America the Beautiful!, This Land is My Land, etc. What a beautiful and touching sight they all loved it, and were SO proud!!

Topping off the week of fun was the OLD-FASHIONED COUNTRY FAIR on Saturday afternoon. Good golly this exceeded even MY expectations of how much fun folks can have when they get together - and they were pretty high! There was something for everyone, but the absolute best part was just seeing families playing together, members sitting on the bank just chit-chatting, and SO many members working to make it all come together!! With the incredible heat and humidity of the day, a special thanks goes to Natalie Tumlin for bringing up a large supply of washcloths and hand towels for everyone to dip in ice water to wrap around necks and wipe brows, and for lending her Squeeze Breeze for squirting down and fanning the participants!!

It would take too many paragraphs to narrate all the fun, but I do want to recognize and thank everyone who helped make the Country Fair such a HUGE success! First thanks go to my awesome family for being there to pick up the pieces, and do so many of the odd jobs, and to be sure that Natalie was included in all the fun when I was running elsewhere! Thank you Bill, Jennifer, and Tracy!! And now..

THANKS to the following, for running the following!

Arm Wrestling - Bill Hooper, Bob McCormack
Cotton Candy - Bill Tumlin
High Striker - Nile Hatcher, Art Molitor
Horseshoes - Peter Tichner, Al Daniel
Lemonade & Tea Stand - Marie Thompson, Kate Hodges, Liz Fricker, Sarah Golden
Sack Races - Judy Guebert
Face Painting - Nancy Molitor, Jane Smith, Anna Froehlich
Karaoke Contest - Rick & Jane Trowbridge
Seed Spitting Contest - Kay Redmond, Kathleen Fricker
Make Your Own Ice Cream - Jennifer Tumlin
Moon Walk Monitors - Jo Smither, Lauren Sinclair
3-Legged Race - Rita McCormack, Margaret Ann Briggs
Crab Races & Relays - Frank Briggs
Darts - David & Diane Shively
Hay Rides - Bryce & Debbie Dryden

During Church Service on Sunday morning, Debbie and Bryce Dryden shared their experiences on their recent mission to Honduras. It was a wonderful and inspiring account! Rick Trowbridge provided guitar music for the service, and led the group in an awesome round of God Bless America!

And, in that this IS a Sailing Club - not just a fun-raising club! - there were fleet races and the Snipe ALIGO Regatta on Saturday and Sunday. Much appreciation to RC PRO Karl Anderson, and Chris Cyrul, Buzz Benzur, and Clint Hodges for switching Sat.'s start so that we could start the Country Fair at 4:00!

Beth Tumlin

AYC hosted the U.S. Sailing O Day Semi-Final championship
for Area D Saturday on July 13th

What is the O Day Championship, you ask? It is a single-handed, ladder-series event, open to men and women, which begins at the club level. The trophy was named for George O Day, the helmsman of the gold medal winning 5.5 Meter in 1960 at Naples, Italy. He is well known to sailors for his boat building skills, which included a unique version of the Finn. In 1962, O Day's friends dedicated the USYRU trophy in his name for a national single-handed championship.

AYC hosted 15 participants from around the Southeast from as far away as New Orleans. Each participant qualified through Association Quarter Final eliminations. The four associations represented were: Dixie Inland Yacht Racing Association (DIYRA), Gulf Yachting Association (GYA), Florida Sailing Association (FSA) and South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association (SAYRA). The top 5 finishers from each Association's Quarter Finals were invited to participate in the Semi Finals. Several entrants were not able to make it at the last minute, and in their absence AYC had the opportunity to place five sailors: Sean Adams, Martin Frank, Bob McCormack, Scott McCormack and David Muhlhausen.

We started sailing at 10 a.m. and sailed nine races before coming off the water at 6 p.m. Luckily, we had wind all day, for which we were thankful! We certainly didn't want a repeat of the conditions at Dixie or the Saturday following the Fourth of July!

The sailors began the day with good breeze, navigating through some rainstorms. By mid-afternoon, the sun fought its way through the clouds, helping to dry off the participants, volunteers and spectators. Finishes were as follows:

Congratulations to Anthony Hudson who now advances to compete in the O Day Finals in Detroit the weekend of August 10th.

It should be noted that Josh Putnam broke the upper section of his mast at the end of race 5. Martine Rawlings gave her mast to Josh and retired for the rest of the event. That is great sportsmanship!

We would not have been able to pull off this event if it had not been for the dedication of many volunteers and participants, of which two are especially noteworthy. First, it was a pleasure to have Carl Reigart, Commodore of DIYRA, sailing in the event. Second, Bill Ross came all the way from Charlotte, NC to serve as the water Senior U.S. Sailing Judge. In addition to serving as judge, Bill was brought to keep his son, Mike Ross, acting Principle Race Officer (PRO), in line and out of trouble. On Mike's flotilla, Kathleen Fricker did scoring. Jim Roberts and Brian Haile manned the signals and pin mark aboard the pontoon boat furnished by Gordon and Mary Thompson. Mark boats were Lee Bradley, with the help of John Preston tending to the leeward mark and handing out drinks after the races from Lee and Courtney Bradley's boat. On the second mark boat was Bryce Dryden with Pete Stump (a prospective member) and Don Dixon tending to the windward mark operating from Frank and Margaret Ann Briggs powerboat. Kathleen Fricker and Andrea Helfrich made breakfast and Debbie Dryden handled lunch. Carolyn Marks for the help in laying out the Directions to AYC for the Notice of Race. Last but not least was Bryce Dryden as Regatta Chairman. He had a hard time being on the administration end and not competing in this event and said he even enjoyed it.

I appreciate each and every one of you for donating your time and boats. It was an outstanding event!

Snipe Fleet 330 would like to invite you to join in the celebration of
50 years of the Halloween Regatta at AYC

We expect a HUGE turnout due to the extra special celebration and the World Masters being in St Pete the week before. Many international Snipe sailors are expected to come up to Atlanta to enjoy our hospitality and sail on the Great Allatoona before they return to their Country.

This year we will be having live entertainment both Friday and Saturday night. Compton Coleman will be pikin on Friday night. He and his family are Snipe sailors from Valdosta. Compton has played at AYC several times and he was well received.

We also have brought back for the anniversary the 'custom hand painted mugs'. So if you would like one please register by 9/1 so we can prepare one for you.

All the regattas at AYC have long histories of being among the best in the Class over this 50 year history. The facilities and the people in combination produce an extra special event which people come back to participate in again and again.

Snipe Fleet 330 deeply appreciates all the help all the AYC members have provided to make this event a success over the years.

Please come celebrate.

Sail a Y-Flyer Day

On Saturday, May 11th, thirteen Y-Flyers took part in a fleet sponsored Sail a Y-Flyer Day. In order to promote Y-Flyer sailing, new AYC members, and guests that participated in the AYC Open House were invited to come and crew on a Y-Flyer.

The day's event started at the AYC club house at 12:45 PM. Skippers and crew were paired up, and off to rig the boats they went. As the day progressed, the wind continued to build. By race time, winds were 12 to 18 knots depending on who you asked. Of the 13 boats, 10 left the dock to race, and race they did!!!

At the end of the 1st race, sailors returned to the dock to swap stories. It was noted that there were several wet people from the spray, with huge smiles of excitement on their faces. Comments ranged from WOW!!! to I'm going to buy a Y-Flyer, and most went back out for a second race.

Guests were then invited to join the entire fleet for a BYOB party, dinner, and fleet meeting. During the meeting, Randy Smith and Carlin Hodges presented "recycled" awards to all of the days participants in order of their finish for the day. Top honors went to Len Lesparance and crew Brad Beebe, 2nd place was Amanda Hodges with Kari Beebe as crew, and third place went to Randy Smith and Jim Campbell.

All-in-all the day was a huge success.

Babysitting Co-op

The AYC Babysitting Co-op is up and running for the 2002 sailing season! The only thing missing is you! Come join our group and you can be assured of a babysitter while you spend some quality time racing with your spouse. (remember him?)

Please call Marji Cyrul at (423) 332-3214 or e-mail me at "marjicyrul@cs.com" for more information.

Check out the playground! It was pressure-washed and cleaned up by Alan Thompson, Nile Hatcher and the Cyrul's. We are now in the decision-making process to decide how to make it better. If you have an opinion, now is the time to give it!

AYC Kitchen Update

Great big thanks and appreciation goes to you who bought many of the needed kitchen items --- to you who pledged money towards these needs --- to you who put cash in the box to be used for the kitchen.

This renovation of the kitchen and asking for donations happens every fifty years and this is the year. We all use the kitchen and/or eat the food prepared in the kitchen.

So if you have not had a chance to help this cause, please do so by mailing a check to Bliss Jones (our treasurer) and designate it for the kitchen. Or you can give or mail your donation to Charlene Smith. Please help if you can. We hope to have everything in place by June 1st. We invite you to come and take a look at the new kitchen.

A Celebrity Is Amongst Our Membership

Have you heard, on April 25th, Dr. Paula Anderson-Green had a book signing to celebrate the release of her book "A Hot-Bed Of Musicians" music of the Virginia-Carolina mountains.

Paula has been working on this book for well over ten years. Rhett Turner, son of Ted Turner, did the photography for this book.

Let’s all give Paula our best for, I know, a job well done.

Advanced Juinior Training With "Coach" Dustin Kays

The WORD is out from our Advanced Juniors ---- Watch out, adults. Our work is cutout for us! Feedback from two of the nine participants in the Advanced Class (which started in mid-March) is: "This class is great!….. This is going to be a good season…" Katie Anderson’s comments on the classes — so far: " We’ve practiced keeping our boat stopped on the starting line….. Roll Tacks…. and efficient upwind sailing…… and another good drill: "lining up in a line and not passing each other"…. Amy Thompson says this about summarizing their classes: "We’ve practiced Starts…. getting on the line in 30 seconds… stopping in place; backwinding then trimming sails and holding positions…. Upwind techniques…." Does this sound like material all us adults would like to be covering???

More to come with remaining Advanced Classes in May: Mark roundings, downwind and reaching techniques… and putting it all together going ‘round the course! Way to go, Advanced Juniors. Way to go, Coach Dustin!!!

Here’s the roster of our teenagers in this great class, in addition to Katie and Amy: Sean Adams, Pete and Robert Gregory, Brett Bradshaw, Greg Remter, Katherine Womble and Ashley Fricker. The class will be going to two or three out-of-town regattas as part of the curriculum. Just look at their accomplishments in the Super Saturday Laser Regatta and the AYC Open. "The proof is in the pudding." Congratulations to each of you on your progression. And, thanks to PARENTS who are driving and chaperoning these Juniors to the out-of-town events. Stay tuned! Keep me posted, Juniors!

March 2002
Bitsy Chase
1911 - 2002

A generation of Thistlers and AYC members bid a last farewell this month to our dear friend Bitsy Chase, who now joins Charlie, her husband of 58 years. Charlie Chase, as many of you will remember, earned his reputation in the Thistle Fleet not for competitive sailing, but for his unfailing, cheerful participation -- year after year sailing so many club races that we finally invented the Charlie Chase Participation Award to honor his unflappable brand of sportsmanship. Meanwhile, committed "NON-water-wife" Bitsy was the quintessential support team: anxious but encouraging, always at the dock to wave Charlie off and there to bring him in at the end of the day. She was the perfect "land component" for her skipper husband, hosting the best fleet meetings, attending the Thistle Midwinters year after year, producing the cleverest Dixie decorations and befriending the never-ending stream of crews Charlie invited onto his boat. On windless days Bitsy opened the doors of "The Chase Place" to the people she loved most -- AYC’s throngs of little kids. A kindergarten teacher by trade and a grandmother by the grace of God, she raised her own children and grandchildren at the lake as well as a host of other adoring little lake urchins who knew her only as "Granny." Red-haired and freckled, tiny, energetic and eternally cheerful, Bitsy Chase was a permanent part of our lake family for so long that for many of us she will always be there. Farewell, Bitsy -- we are grateful for your life and cheered by our warm memories.

Did you know this guy?

He joined AYC in 1951, native Atlantan died January 6, 2002, leaving his wife who is a current member, four children, one of which is a current member. He received the first Good Will Ambassador Award given by AYC. His Y Flyer were #308, #495, #1502, and #1851 and he sailed every weekend unless out of town at a regatta.

He won many trophies but never the Beers. He loves his Century Inboard/outboard (Miss Jawga) whose motor would lull you to sleep.

This man was Rear Commodore the year Fred Pember was Commodore. Among the many tangible donations to AYC was the big round coffee table in the adult lounge (the one we prop our feet on) having been the mahogany dinner table in his cabin when purchased. If there was such an award he would have been voted the best "gal darn" dancer south of the Mason Dixon.

If you did not know Hill, you missed the best because he was one "Helluva Fellow."

Peek into our AYC kitchen and see the transformation that has taken place

We now have a sparkling new, clean, beautiful kitchen. Alan Thompson visualized the new plan and with the approval of the Board, and with Barry’s expertise, enthusiasm and hard work this miraculous change has come about. Many people have given of their time and resources to make this a usable kitchen in the past. The two that come to mind are Richard Trice - who has been instrumental in obtaining the big refrigerator and the deep stainless steel sinks and who has donated many items to the kitchen and who has come with gloves to scrub the ovens before commissioning in the past. And then there is Kathleen who has seen to the needs of the kitchen, year after year, washing the dish towels, seeing that the supplies needed were there, making the Sunday morning coffee and the countless other things. She also pushed to get the wonderful convection oven that has proved indispensable.

And now it is up to us to do two things. One - give some dollars so we may replace the items that are unsafe or just worn out. The Club money has been spent on the big improvements and there is none left for these necessities. We have a list of the things necessary and the prices. We all use the kitchen, so please, let’s help by contributing to making this a working kitchen. Two - clean the kitchen after you use it. We have a broom and mop in the kitchen for you, plus lots of cleaning supplies. Please do two things: Put things back in the proper place and please use the cutting boards and not the beautiful new counters for chopping and cutting things.

Let’s keep this new kitchen nice, clean and in order. A lot of effort has gone into making it a space we can be proud of.

Mary Thompson

AYC Entertainment

As the lengthening days and warmer temperatures of spring signal the beginning of the sailing year, they're also a sure indicator that the AYC social scene is about to reignite!

AYC Commissioning was the first event of 2002, spearheaded by Margaret Ann and Frank Briggs, Freddie Cleveland and Jane Smith applied their creative talents to the decor, while Kari Beebe and Amy Roberts took on the challenge of reservations. Our warm thanks goes to all of our volunteers.

On the horizon, we look forward to a summer full of Saturday evening cookouts. Club Week will be the first week of July, culminating with our traditional 4th of July activities. (Request those vacation days now!) And we have finally settled on the dates for the Ladies' Weekend: September 28th and 29th. For those of the feminine persuasion, this is not to be missed - just ask some of the fun-loving participants from last year...

By the way, we have a new AYC Reservations Hotline - this will be used for club event reservations, as well as being a phone number to call for an updated message regarding current club activities. The new phone number is 770-638-0300.

We are especially grateful to all of the folks involved in revamping the clubhouse kitchen. What an amazing transformation... this puts a whole different light on "kitchen duty"!

So dust off your sailing gear and your party hat, the season has begun... see you at the lake!

Now for this months trivia questions :

1) What former members father was the originator of the comic strip Moon Mullen?

2) In the last 50’s or early 60’s, what current members' brother showed movies on the lawn with his father's 8mm projector?

Now on to the answers of last months trivia questions.

The young person who sold produce at the gates to AYC was our one and only Judy Thompson Ross. Carl and I were not members at the time, but this information was given to me by a very reliable source, Mitzi Wade. Thanks Mitzi.

The rascal who was pulled over by the water patrol was the one and only desperado, Carl King. For all those interested the fine was $53.00 and Carl had not even caught a fish. Now, for Henry Wade, who also had his pole in the waters of the Keys, he told the officers he had called the 1-800 number for his application and they believed him. Where is the justice?

February 2002
International Old Goat Regatta at AYC
April 27-28, 2002

Heads up ALL sailors, not just those over 50! The International Old Goat will be hosted at AYC this year just one week after the AYC Open, and we need everybody on the water. Here’s the deal: you DO have to be 50 to skipper, but you DON’T have to be 50 to crew. So you will be hard pressed to explain to Kathleen Fricker why you aren’t there, if you should even try!

This year’s IOG will be a pursuit race, which is rather like a backward handicap race. You can sail any class boat and, yes, may sail your own boat. (No borrowing required!) Unlike a handicap race where everyone starts together and finishes are adjusted, in the pursuit race classes start separately (slower boats first) and are awarded finishes in the order they cross the line. So if we all sail equally smart and are equally lucky, all boats will cross the finish line at the same time. And do we think that’s gonna happen? NAAAH! That’s why we have regattas, folks. Be sure to make it to this one! Look for details in the next Scuttlebutt.

Howard Mead
Commodore, 1971
1919 - 2002

AYC lost one of its "old venerables" this month with the passing of retired Thistle legend Howard Mead. Howard and Dot "Dorothy Jane" came to the club in 1955, raised their three children there, and until they retired from sailing in 1991 built a legacy of family sailing and service to AYC, as well as an unmatched reputation for keen competition on the water. Winner of countless Thistle regattas, including (but of course) our own Dixie, Club champion several times over, and District champion so many times that they finally had to retire the trophy, Howard could also hold his own out of our neighborhood and (probably about the time Bryce Dryden was being born) brought Fleet 48 its first Nationals fame by bringing home a second-place trophy. Though well known for his acerbic wit, Howard had a generous spirit when it came to sailing and was always available to encourage and coach, even when he was beating the Black Watch plaid off you. We owe much to Howard and the stalwarts of his generation, who helped make the Thistle fleet and AYC what they are today.

Level 1 Instructor Course at BSC

A US Sailing Small Boat Sailing Instructor Course will be conducted over two weekends in March at Birmingham Sailing Club. The dates are March 9/10 and March 16/17, 2002.

The Small Boat Sailing Intructor Course is designed for sailing instructors who will be teaching beginners how to sail. This 40 hour course covers sports psychology, lesson planning, classroom, on-the-water teaching techniques and adverse weather activities. The instructor will learn how to teach more safely, effectively, and creatively.

Small Boat Instructor Courses provide insight into the nuances of teaching sailing, the role of the instructor, some of the legal ramifications involved, analysis of teaching style and practical applications.

Candidates MUST be 16 at the time of the course, if under 18 years of age, they will receive "Sailing Assistant" classification. Instructor certification is only available to those who have reached their 18th birthday. The course fee is $295.00 and candidates must have a US Sailing Membership ($50 a year for candidates/instructors).

DIYRA Training Classes Scheduled At BSC

BSC in conjunction with DIYRA will host a USSAILING Level 1 Instructor’s Course at BSC. The four-day course will be held over two weekends. March 9th and 10th and March 16th and 17th. Registration must be done online with USSAILING and the cost including study material is $295.00. CPR and First Aid certification is also required to be separately to receive certification. (www.ussailing.org/training). The classes will run from 8 am to 6 pm each day. Housing at the lake can be arranged for the classes beginning Friday night please call Dianne.

BSC in conjunction with DIYRA will host a Sailing Coach Seminar in Birmingham. Seminar will be held in town no on the water activities. Will probably be at my office training facility for needed visual aid material. (1121 Riverchase Office Road, south of the Galleria Mall in Hoover just south of Birmingham city limits) Kenneth Andreasen, USODA Director of Sailing will teach this course. The cost should be $45.00, and include lunch both days. The dates are April 13th and 14th. The class will discuss coaching junior sailors in optimist primarily, but is very transferable to coaching any age in any boat. Should be 8 hours on Saturday and 5 hours on Sunday. More details will follow but please call me asap if you plan to attend.

Both training sessions will be available to anyone interested even if not a DIYRA club member. Please pass the word. If we are interested in an adult learn to sail program at our clubs these are the starting steps. Level one teaches you how to teach sailing to any age student in any boat. The coaches clinic will be focused on being able to coach other sailors in racing.

Fleet captains, this would be an excellent tool to have one or more fleet members trained to help new fleet member and grow our fleets! What a potential fleet builder a few organized coaching sessions for our fleet would bring!!!!!

Baby-sitting Co-Op

The AYC Babysitting Co-op is gearing up for the 2002 sailing season! If you have kids and love to sail, you need to join our group! We have found a way to have babysitting provided for EVERY sailing day from April through October with only a minimal commitment. Each family is responsible for 7 days of babysitting. It could be even less if you join us this year! The kids are watched either on the playground, the beach, the campground or the cabins. We are flexible enough to provide naps for smaller kids, along with playtime for the older kids. Please call Marji Cyrul at (423) 332-3214 or write me at "marjicyrul@cs.com".

I will be finalizing the babysitting schedule once the sailing schedule is done

AYC Entertainment 2002

We'll be donning our finest nautical attire for a red, white and blue approach to AYC's 2002 Commissioning Ceremony and Dinner on Saturday, April 6th. Margaret Ann and Frank Briggs are in charge of this year's event - so you know it will be wonderful. To be followed on Sunday, April 7th, by the first club races of the 2002 season, of course!

Our new Mamadore, Courtney Bradley, is planning a fabulous Ladies Luncheon in mid-May. There are rumors of a casual "ice skating party" just around the corner - keep your ears tuned for one of our phone messages with all of the details. AND, we are hoping to squeeze in a "Ladies Weekend" if we can locate a free weekend in the calendar - we'll keep you posted.

As to the rest of the year, we already have our "thinking caps" in place. We plan to continue with our Super Summer Saturday Nights for the months of June, July and August - you know, grinning and grilling! This year's Club Week will be Sunday, June 30th - Sunday, July 7th with the Fourth of July landing squarely on Thursday - I'm sure you will want to save a few days of your summer vacation for that.
