Scuttlebutt Club Newsletter - 2003November / December '03 ScuttlebuttHeadlines ‘n Footnotes... Junior TrainingAttention all Juniors and PARENTS: Junior Week, 2004, will be held June 6-11 next year ... so please mark your calendars now. Ann Bryan and Jim Womble are co-chairs for Junior Week this time, with Kay Redmond in charge of Sailing & Waterfront. We will use Optis and Sunfish for the Beginner and Upper Basic Classes. Lasers, Sunfish (as needed) will be used for Intermediate Level... and 420's and Lasers for Upper Intermediate and Advanced Juniors. More information and registration packets available in February / March. Please contact Jim and Ann Bryan --- especially if you're a new member with youngsters aged 12-17… and not already in our notebook of names. Great plans are in the making for 2004 Junior Training. Please email Kay Redmond at kbred@mindspring.com to ensure your Junior is in our Distribution Lists. Advanced and Upper Intermediate Juniors are urged to participate in LLSC's Winter Frostbite Laser Series at Lake Lanier during January / February. Watch for more info down the road! Advanced Juniors will be using their Lasers PLUS the great new AYC fleet of six 420's in training development next Spring and Summer. Juniors, be sure and get your parents to join the Laser Fleet, so you can be properly scored in fleet races next season. We have in place as Chairman of the Winter "Sunfish-Opti Boat Repair Team" new club member Jim Kemp with Chris Hurst as chief "right hand man". Anyone who wishes to volunteer to help, please contact Jim or Chris. Thanks to both of you! Former Commodore John Todd will continue to serve as guru Consultant to this team. And for more sailing training news: Barbara Bradshaw has agreed to be coordinator for the Emory Sailing Team activities with Emory's 420's… (Thanks, Barbara!) The plan is for these boats to be available as needed for our Juniors, along with being used as double-handed boats for our Adult Sailing Training in addition to our Sunfish for Basic Adult Sailing classes. Our Adult Sailing Classes presently reach out to GSU, Kennesaw State, the general community, plus our own AYC folks…and have brought several new, enthusiastic members to AYC. In wrapping up "Headlines" for 2003, I’d like to reiterate hearty thanks to the Commodore and Board of Governors for your support and to Barry Hasty for keeping our all important safety boats in such good condition this season. Kay Redmond, Junior Training Director 12/04
In remembrance of Ed MoulthropIt is with great sadness that we report the passing of longtime AYC member, Ed Moulthrop. Ed made his mark on the world in so many ways - but we at AYC will remember him for his upbeat outlook on life and the perennial smile on his face. Ed and his wife Mae joined the club in 1956. You could often see Ed on the lake in his Y-Flyer - taking time away from his architectural and artistic endeavors. Ed first came to Atlanta as a professor of architecture with Georgia Tech. Upon joining a prestigious architectural firm, he was tapped to design many prominent projects, including the Atlanta Civic Center, the Carillon at Stone Mountain, and the modern, clean-lined building which originally housed the High Museum of Art. But, ultimately, it was his love of woodturning which captured his full attention. The simplistically elegant lines of his modernist style thrust this ancient craft into the realm of contemporary art. His work can be found in the White House and in museums around the world. We are fortunate that Ed has left a living legacy, as he has inspired his son Philip and grandson Matt to embrace and set their own marks on this beautiful and tactile art form. Family and friends will gather for a service on Saturday, October 4th at 2 pm at the Arlington Cemetary in Sandy Springs. A public memorial service will be held on November 30th at the Central Presbyterian Church in Atlanta. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family and loved ones. September '03 Scuttlebutt
2003 AYC’s Club Champion AYC Club ChampionshipThe annual Atlanta Yacht Club Championship Regatta was sailed in Thistles September 13 and 14. It was sailed in light air and dominated by the Laser Fleet and the Thistle Fleet. Our hats are off to Robert Gregory, a sixteen year old, who is the 2003 AYC Club Champion. His father, Matt, was his crew. Good job Robert!!!!! The Junior sailors, representing the Laser Fleet, were impressive sailing against AYC's finest. The Thistle Fleet had 3 of the top 5.
Beth, Tracy & Jennifer Tumlin AYC Women’s ChampionshipShe is the new AYC Women’s Champion. She is the Cobb County Teacher of the year. She is Wonder Woman and she is Jennifer Tumlin! This year’s championship was absolutely incredible with Jennifer beating Judy Ross in a tie breaker. Judy got a bullet in the last race to force the tie, but Jennifer had a second to Judy’s third in the second race to win. Amanda Hodges just barely edged out Holly Gregory by one point to secure third place. There were lead changes by the score in just about every race. It was great competition and everyone had a lot fun. Here is how they finished: 1. Jennifer Tumlin New Club 420'S At AYC!As everyone knows, training of sailors, and particularly younger juniors is an integral and essential part of AYCs future health and well-being. With this in mind, the Board of Governors unanimously approved the purchase of six new Club 420s complete with rigging including spinnaker, trapeze, and hand launch trailer for each. This boat class was chosen out of a number considered after polling members who have played key roles in training over the years. Among the primary reasons was the observation that most clubs and competition opportunities for juniors have moved to, or are moving to this boat. The new 420s will supplement the aging Sunfish and Optis currently in service, and begin to answer the need to retire boats as they become unable to provide ability for first-rate training.
They’re Coming!! Mark your calendars for Saturday, September 27th to welcome the arrival of AYC’s beautiful, new sextuplets! Estimated arrival time is 9:00AM. Much like when our Opti fleet was proudly brought into our Club, making a giant leap forward in our Junior Training, we are just as proudly advancing our level of training again with the arrival of our six new Vanguard 420s. These are "event" boats that have been sailed in only one regatta and were a real find! After several months of information and fact gathering, Board discussions, discussions with other yacht clubs, negotiations with Vanguard reps and dealers and more Board discussions, the vision has now become reality. So many gave their time, opinions and expertise in this effort, but special recognition goes to Tom Schmitt and Ed Marks for their dedication in making this happen. Thanks guys. And thanks to the Board of Governors for the forward thinking and support on this. Everyone please come witness the unloading and setting up of our new additions. That Saturday, the 27th, will be the initial unveiling and celebration, but look for the Grand Unveiling to be announced in the following weeks.
Isaac & Zoe Molitor AYC’s Labor Day Weekendfeatured almost perfect weather coupled with a festive atmosphere. Shirley and Tom Gore coordinated Friday night’s Red Top Mountain dinner trip, followed the next morning by Tom Schmitt’s brainchild Kids Regatta. The competition was tough, and in the end there were many winners. Though there were some murmurs of a protest during the race, everyone walked away happy after the friendly competition. Mid-day activities centered on the One-Eyed Juan’s Wild Regatta, which was ably supported by mark-boats (literally) captained by Tom Gore, John Todd, Philip Moulthrop and pin-boat operator Patrick Reese. Though Thistle skipper Peter Tischner rounded each mark in the lead before the race was called for lightning, the luck of the draw (or rather "bad luck" of the draw) resulted in his eventual last place finish in the card game. The good news was that no one was a loser, and everyone is looking forward to next year’s first place prize of a long weekend for two in the Bahamas. Special mention to Alex Padgett, who finished second solo skippering a Laser. His parents were particularly appreciative of their portion of the prize for his astute poker playing. Our dockmaster Barry Hasty outdid himself this year with the construction of a semi-permanent water slide, which was enjoyed by all, including a very well liked grandmother who slid along with her offspring’s offspring. We understand that the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau is considering listing AYC as "Whitewater North". Saturday night witnessed the first ever AYC Mexican Fiesta, which was preceded by sometimes frozen margaritas underwritten by the Royal Order of the Old Gar. It was a close call as to whether law enforcement would have to be called in for crowd control. The evening culminated with tunes for everyone provided by "The Hit Man" Paul Abdullah. Sunday’s activities featured volleyball compliments of the Rempters, while Ashley Davis arranged for artistic activities for some younger club members. It’s amazing what you can do with shaving cream and sand. Sunday night’s BYO dinner was a great lead into the Dance Party. Thanks to Bob McCormack for coordinating Monday morning’s Fun Run and serving as the master of ceremonies. Pancakes provided by the Thompsons, Gregorys, and Wombles "recarbed" runners and non-runners alike in preparation for the Balloon Bash, which witnessed many volunteers and participants. The wind was ideal and the early morning overcast skies kept boat traffic on the lake to a minimum. Thanks to the crack Race Committee of Alan Thompson and Matt Gregory, which was assembled at 10:15 AM, and to the "balloon boats" skippered by the Pooles, Martinroes, and Daniels. Though there were top finishers in many categories (in fact, one for each boat) the event may have been a precursor for the Men’s Championship as top finishers in the Balloon Bash were all named Gregory. Opti RaceAt 11:03 on Saturday August 30, 2003 PRO Nile Hatcher gave the starting signal for the First Annual Labor Day Opti regatta. Fourteen sailors in eleven boats participated. The sailors and crew were from this years Early Bird and Beginning sailing classes which are taught in Opti’s. The youngest boy sailor was six-year-old Jan Bertrand; the youngest girl was seven year old Lauren Yapp. The course was an out and back in the cove with the start / finish mark just off the Opti dock. The dock acted as the committee boat. The other mark was about where the Slow No Wake mark used to be. The start at the dock provided a great view for the dozen or so spectators who cheered passionately. Al Daniels manned an observation boat at the mark which hosted local dignitaries, including Rear Commodore Briggs whose wife Margaret Ann remained ashore and acted as chair of the awards committee. The first race was a two time out and back. The winds were low and variable but mostly "out of the cove". Lulls brought the entire fleet to a near stop several times. The finish was a fairly tight cluster with the first sailor crossing line at about 11:29. All others finished within another 5 minutes. We forgot to have a scorekeeper, thus the winner and order of subsequent finishers will always be debated. The second race followed immediately and was out and back, capsize and recover the boat and finish at the dock. The winds were a little brisker and the out and back took less than ten minutes. Again the boats finished in a fairly tight cluster and the capsize and recovery of eleven boats at the finish line provided a little more confusion than usually noticed at finishes. Again we forgot to appoint a scorekeeper but the confusion was sufficient that determining the order of finishers may not have been possible any way. A good time was had by all.

AYC Junior Champion Brett Bradshaw Junior Week 2003Junior Week 2003 is history! We all had a great time and can’t wait until next year! We would especially like to thank Kay Redmond and her excellent staff of sailing instructors for taking a week to train the next generation of AYC sailors. (We hear Beau Samuelson is already lined up to teach the advanced class again next year!) The Cabin Parents and those who loaned their cabins should also get a big round of applause for taking on the task of making sure our little angels got their proper rest and quiet time during the night! To everyone who helped in the kitchen; Breakfast, Lunch, Snacks, and Dinner, Thank you from the bottom of our stomachs! A special thanks to those who hosted our activities each evening; Sunday night cookout, Monday night Scavenger Hunt, Tuesday night Casino night, Wednesday night Beach Party, Thursday night X-Games / Wacky Olympics and the Grand Finale the Awards Banquet! Special thanks to Barry Hasty for having our safety boats in such good working order and for topping off our members’ safety boats... We appreciate the use of your small craft, AYC members!... Thanks to all the dock help and boat drivers --- especially Patrick Reese and Bob "Grandfather" Duckworth….both these gentlemen were there every day, all day long, driving safety boats and driving our special photographer, Nancy Molitor, and just doing whatever / whenever to pitch in and help. We all appreciate the superb Race Committee work for Friday’s Regatta --- Art Molitor, R.C. chairman, and his whole team --- Beautifully orchestrated in some challenging wind and weather conditions. As Art so aptly put it: "Watching these kids sail in this wrap-up regatta... It’s like graduation... seeing them perform so well!"... Juniors --- from Opti kids to Sunfish and Laser sailors --- We are sooooo PROUD of you and the progress you made during Junior Week Sailing Camp! And to Holly and Matt Gregory: the superstars who headed up the whole Junior Week, "hats off" and cheers galore to YOU!!! Now, Jim and Ann Bryan Womble: Next year YOU are "up to bat." Fair winds and good sailing! Kay Redmond, Junior Training Director
FYIFreddie Cleveland suffered a small stroke a couple of weeks ago and is recovering at her son, Frank. (770-922-0073) Cards are always appreciated! SCUTTLEBUTT (SKUT-ul-but) EntertainmentMany thanks to all our gracious Club Week hosts and hostesses, starting with Mary and Hal Myers who led a group of lake travel enthusiasts by motorboat to the Red Top Mountain Lodge for dinner on Wednesday. The next activity cranked up Thursday morning with John and Bruce Todd, accompanied by a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers representative, taking a group, by boat, up the lake for a tour of the past, present, and future of our beloved lake. PRO of the expedition was that old salt, Jim Smither. For those of us whose souls are blessed so tremendously by the lake, we learned how important it is to become informed advocates, and participate strenuously in lobbying functions. Next, Julia Martinroe presided over a colony of budding artists involved in creative activities outside the Adult Lounge. Wrapping up Thursday’s activities, Clare Whitfield treated with delightful desserts while Titu and Mimi Doctor, and Wieslaw Wojtczak reminded those in attendance of how fortunate it is to be Americans as they told of the struggles they endured in leaving Communist countries to reach our land of opportunity. Friday, July 4th, 2003, the Tumlin clan was out in force once again to entertain the Club with a full array of All American field games and activities. This fun filled tradition was followed by the first Annual Rally ‘Round the Flag ceremony around the flagpole with Margaret Ann Briggs sharing the Biblical Roots of American liberty, followed by Mike Ross leading in a prayer thanking God for our freedom as Americans, those who have paid for that freedom with their blood, and the freedom offered in Christ. The ceremony was ended with Jim Womble leading those assembled in God Bless America. Moreover, Nancy Molitar had done an outstanding job of assembling a fascinating display of memorabilia and photographs from AYC Veterans as a "Military Salute" in the Adult Lounge. The Club is grateful to Martin and Julie Burnup, Means Davis, Rusty Hanley, Emmie and Charles Kohler, Art Molitar, Hal Myers, Tom Nolan, Patrick Reese, Jim Smither, Swanny and Pem Williams, and Pem Williams, Jr. for sharing their past military services with the Club. To top off a perfect day, Eleanor Schaltenbrand and her able team of "grill masters" did a terrific job with the Hot Dog and Hamburger Feast, while Carol Lade did her usual superlative assembly of delectable desserts down at the point where the fireworks of a number of municipalities and other entities could be viewed in the comfort and safety of the AYC family.
Saturday afternoon brought a parade of bicycles and wagons decorated in various patriotic themes with materials supplied by Al and Gigi Daniel. A highlight of the parade was newly crowned Junior Champions, Brett Bradshaw and Amy Thompson, riding in triumph in the rear of Rear Commodore Frank Briggs’ convertible. Next came the display of awesomely beautiful wooden boats displayed by some AYC members demonstrating their amazing craftsmanship. That evening those in attendance were treated to some of the world’s best barbeque followed by The Sock Hops whose incredible musical talents kept young and old alike dancing to a marvelous array of tunes. The ballroom was still well filled at 11:30 when they finally presented, "Good Night Sweetheart". Sunday morning, fabulous organizer, Rita McCormack led in the assembly of a wonderful array of dishes at the Annual Brunch over in the Cabin Colony. By Sunday afternoon it is doubtful that anyone who participated in Club Week did not feel grateful to be well fed, and grateful to be an American. Finally, special thanks to Mitzi Wade, Commissioner of Reservations, who provides stability in this potentially stressful function; and to decorator "extraordinaire", Patti Yapp who did such a marvelous job in making the Club look so patriotic; and to all of you who participated so enthusiastically, and helped in countless, unmentioned ways! By the way, wait until you see what an encore Labor Day is going to be!! Make your reservations soon.
Now Hear This!AYC salutes its members, past and present, of our Armed Forces! Friday, July 4 6:00 p.m. "Happy Hour" in the Adult Lounge Veterans! You are invited. . . ( no, ordered!) . . . to bring photos, memorabilia and war stories for your AYC friends to admire and enjoy. We will have an adult overlooking the display at all times to keep your treasures safe. Please call Art or Nancy Molitor at 770-934-1181 to let us know that you plan to participate. 6/03 Robert MillerJust a little note to advise that Robert Miller, a member of the AYC since the early 50's, passed away 5/26/2003. He had been an avid Y-Flyer fleet member for years and was one of the early members of the club if not one of the founding fathers. His love of boats and sailing knew no bounds and tremendously enriched both his life as well as all around him. He is currently survived by his wife Helen Miller, Daughter Karen Miller Johnston and son William Miller as well as four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. This is not the official "obit" however, thought that the club members whom Dad had been friends with for over fifty years would want to know. The Area D Agreement fee is split between the DIYRA clubs that wish to participate in the events. Last year, DIYRA was on the rotation to host the Area D Semifinals for the O'Day Cup. Atlanta Yacht Club stepped up and hosted a great event. Thanks to AYC Commodore Lee Bradley and Vice-Commodore Bryce Dryden for putting on this event. In 2002 DIYRA sent representatives to the AREA D Semi-Finals in the Youth Championships (Sears/Bemis/Smythe), Adams Cup, and O'day. This year, DIYRA is scheduled to host the Sears/Bemis/Smythe Area D Semi-finals July 12-13, 2003. If at all possible, the host club should be selected at the annual DIYRA meeting in January. Also, at the Annual DIYRA meeting hosts clubs for the Adult and Youth Championships should be selected. Below is a summary of the events. Please consider sending your DIYRA representative with a proposal to host one or all of these events at your club. It is a great chance to show case your club, give your members an advantage of "being on the home court", and bring top sailors from our area to your club.
