Junior Training NewsReported by John Irvine Under the excellent stewardship of Ian Elliott and many other dedicated parents, the Spring Junior Training program has been an extraordinary success. The winds have been mostly favorable for the 24 juniors sailing in Opti, Laser, and 420s. Add strong coaching to the equation from AYC's own Max Hardage (2006 AYC junior champion and club champion) and Will Paschal (captain of UGA sailing team) and the result is a big leap in the strength of our junior sailors! Speaking of big leaps, AYC has three teams competing in the Chubb U.S. Sailing Junior Championship series this summer: Sears (Thistle) : Elliot Newnham, Eleanor Newnham,Trey Daniel The group will be competing in the Semi finals which are also hosted by AYC on July 14-15th. The winner of each class at the semi finals will compete for the coveted title of the best junior sailors in the country at the Chubb U.S Sailing Junior Championship in New Jersey in mid August! Please congratulate these juniors and cheer them on!! Also, please extend a big thank you to Jim Smither, Carl Owens, Means Davis, and the many other club members active in the junior program, not only for making the Chubb U.S. Sailing regattas possible, but for making them first class events. Registration is now open for Opti Early Birds and Basic Level I & II classes that start mid June. Go to the AYC web site for more information. Juniors Rock! |

In Loving Memory... Candy Simmons, i.e.Superwoman, passed away on March 29, 2007 after a ten year battle against breast cancer. Her spirit and fight was astounding as her battle against the disease continued through high and low times. She was superwoman as her beloved Judson and family liked to call her because there wasn't much she couldn't or didn't do. In her lake cabin she and Judson turned out fabulous gourmet feasts. The Y-Fleet can attest to the wonderful delights she shared with us for the Beers and Y-flyer meetings. She loved to garden, sew, and create wonderful topiaries for the Southeastern Flower Show. But most of all she was an adoring mother to Allison, Wendy and Julia and the loving wife of Judson. We will all miss her and cherish her memory. Written by Sally Dorr |

From the Editor
The schedule for 2007 is as follows: February Issue Deadline - January 15 In addition to the standard articles, I will be looking for feature articles and pictures. If you have sailing related ads you want posted in the Scuttlebutt, please let me know prior to the deadline. My name recently changed and I moved up considerably in the alphabet, so in this year's yearbook, you’ll find me under the A's rather than the T's. I included my picture at the top so you can put my face with my name. Flag me down when you see me and let me know of interesting facts about yourself, other members or let me know if you have some great pictures that I may include. May the winds carry you warmly through the winter, |

As I was looking out the window this weekend, into the 20 degree weather (going into the negatives later this week) with snow falling and ice forming on the roads, I began to wonder what exactly avid sailors do in Northern Illinois in the winter. I've heard more than once that Chicagoans love nothing more than outdoor time (weather permitting). So I thought the winter must be a depressing time for people up here. As it turns out, my coworker's husband (Pete Fader) is a summer sailor and a winter iceboater. So, there's the answer to that question. When the lakes freeze, sailors up north go iceboating. This subject obviously sparked my interest, so to get a little more information on the subject, I did some Internet research and talked with Pete. Here's what I found out: Iceboats range from around 12 feet to 30+ feet and can travel up to 5 times faster than the wind (100+ mph!). Ice boats have three skates or runners: one in the front, which the tiller controls, and 2 side runners that are attached to the boat by a crossbar, which is 8 feet wide or more. Iceboats typically sail on 2 out of the 3 runners. Just like regular sailboats, iceboats don't have brakes, so if you want to slow down from 75 mph, simply head into the wind. Iceboats heal, require hiking, and are capable of capsizing. The DN is a popular class of iceboat (12 ft long, 60 square feet of sail area, 100-150 pounds, made of wood, with a max speed of 60 mph).
Pete characterizes ice boating as a "faster, quieter form of snowmobiling" and said that it is similar to sailing, just a lot colder! Pete grew up on Sandusky Bay, and when he was in high school, he and his father built a DN from a kit. It took them 3 days to put it together, and they spent the next 4 years sailing it. Pete shared some experiences with me, such as the time his father capsized the boat with his hand wrapped around the mainsheet and was dragged across the ice. He ended up with two broken ribs! Wherever there's a sailor, there's an adventure.
Now that I have found out that there is something to do in the winter in Northern Illinois and have made a new friend in a new place, I think I'll take Pete's advice that if I get the chance to go iceboating, jump on it. What a thrill it would be to travel across the ice at 60 mph… and we thought Thistles were fast!

I was thinking of getting a small outboard runabout. We all know there are a few days in the summer when there are better things to do on the water than sailing. This lead to thoughts of restoring an older boat and this then lead to thoughts of building a boat. I had built a couple of sea kayaks several years ago but nothing as big or involved as what I had in mind. After looking at several plans I found the plans for the Rascal runabout available from WoodenBoat magazine. At 15 ft. long and 450 lbs. (without motor) this is actually about the same size as a Thistle but with a 60 HP motor it can get up to 50 mph, or more! I also found that there are a few other builders who have shared some of their experiences.
Over the last year I was able to get the frames built, installed the chines, shear, battens, and then the first layer of planking. Just before Christmas I had some help from Art M. and Darryl A. and got it flipped over to start on the cockpit and deck. After that, it's back over to do the second layer of planking and then once more to finish the topsides and start the varnishing. Hope to launch some time in 2007 (maybe).

Many of you were at Commissioning when US Sailing President Janet Baxter presented the Arthur B. Hanson Rescue Medal to each of them. The link was recently added to the US Sailing site with the full and complete story and report.
Congrats again to Robert, Holly, and Katherine for this accomplishment.
