Reported by Heather Morse We had a great meeting and ping pong tournament in January, thanks to hosts: Ann and John Beach. Fleet captain, Heather Morse held off all ping pong competitors until John Beach was able to win late in the evening. He must not have known that the winner becomes the next Fleet Captain (Just kidding). Brenda Thompson has made our plans for the rest of our fleet meetings as follows: Meetings for 2008: We have been thinking about our fleet members who need some TLC. Hal Meyers has moved to Texas for the winter. We hear he is doing well, and getting involved in activities in his new locale. Bunky Helfrich is being evaluated for a bone marrow transplant this month at MD Anderson in Houston. Check his website at www.caringbridge.org/visit/bunky. Donna Wagner is still on medication for her recurrence of breast cancer, she has fatigue, and missed the meeting last month. Rusty Hanley's 103 year old father passed away 12/24/07. We have a new fleet scorer: Nile Hatcher. He predicts a high probability that he will win big this year. Our treasurer is Brad Beebe. Please send him your fleet dues of $30. Our big news for this year is that we are hosting the Y-flyer 2008 Nationals, June 23-27. We would like to extend an invitation to all AYC skippers to sail with us. To skipper in the nationals you must be a member of AYFYRA by May 26th. Dues are $30 and can be paid to Nile Hatcher. Nile and Lavon Hatcher are Regatta Chairs and already have the planning well in hand. You are welcome to get in some practice in fleet racing throughout the spring also. Y knot sail a Y? Gilbert Beers Memorial Regatta & TrophySince 1954 Gilbert Beers and E.O. "Smitty" Smithfield, early member and founding father of the Atlanta Yacht Club, were partners in a Consulting and Construction firm that built dams for the Georgia Power Company. These sailing enthusiasts had seen pictures and heard stories of a one design yacht known as the Y-Flyer, designed by Alvin Youngquist - Commodore of the White Lake Yacht Club in Whitehall, Michigan. Gilbert Beers drove to Michigan where he purchased the first Y-Flyer to appear at the Atlanta Yacht Club... Y-Flyer Fleet #1 was born. Sadly in 1953 Gilbert Beers passed away. In 1954 his partner Smitty Smithfield (father of Betty Smithfield-Smith and grandfather of Tara, Amanda and Kevin) envisioned and established an invitational regatta with a perpetual trophy to memorialize the man who brought the first Y-Flyer to the Atlanta Yacht Club. |

About The Fleet
The Atlanta Yacht Club is the home of Y-Flyer Fleet No. 1, first organized in the 1950's. The Y-Flyer is a 18' sloop rigged sailboat that carries a main and a jib sail and can be raced with a one or two person crew or comfortably daysailed with up to 5 people. The Y-Flyer is a one-design class of sailboat (meaning all boats are constructed to the same specifications) popular throughout the south, midwest and Canada. Its relatively light weight-- 500 lbs. fully rigged -- makes the Y-Flyer a pleasure to sail in light to medium breezed common to inland sailing. The Y-Flyer can be rigged and ready to sail in as little as 20 minutes and is one of the most active fleets both on and off the water at the Atlanta Yacht Club. Want more info on the Y-Flyer? Check out the official Y-Flyer website Y-Fleet Captain - YFlyerCaptain@AtlantaYachtClub.org |
